Scripture to Read: Matthew 21:1–11
As we know, Jesus came to earth in an average body like ours. He also lived a perfect life but was entirely misunderstood by most, especially the religious leaders of His day. Jesus came for a specific purpose, and God tells us this through John in 1 John 3:5 & 8: 5 “You know that He appeared in order to take away sins; and in Him there is no sin.” 8 “The Son of God appeared for this purpose, to destroy the works of the devil.” What an awesome reminder that Christ came to take away our sins and destroy the devil’s work. To carry out the Father’s perfect will, Jesus spent daily fellowship in prayer with our Heavenly Father. We know Jesus never did anything that God the Father had not already commanded Him to do. Jesus said this in John 5:19: “Truly, truly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of Himself, unless it is something He sees the Father doing; for whatever the Father does, these things the Son also does in like manner.” Jesus said something similar in John 5:30, John 6:38, John 8:28, John 12:49, John 14:10, and other passages. When Jesus asked His disciples to get Him the donkey and the colt, He fulfilled the Father’s will as prophesied in Zechariah 9:9. Jesus rode the colt, signifying that He came in peace, for He is the Prince of Peace. A conquering general would have ridden in on a horse, not a colt. So, Christ’s triumphal entry was the picture of perfect humility.
