Day 1

Scripture to Read: Matthew 1:18

God used eight different men to write His Word, which we know as the New Testament. Matthew was one of those writers. God used these men to reveal all He wanted us to know about Him- self as Father, Son, and Spirit. The focus for this week is on Je- sus. Jesus was 100% human, being born of a woman, and 100% God because the seed planted in Mary was from the Holy Spirit. Jesus was the perfect sacrifice for all sins, for all time, and for all mankind because He was 100% human. Jesus lived a sinless life; therefore, He was able to pay the full price for the sins of all. Jesus came for this purpose: to destroy the works of the devil (1 Corinthians 15:26, 54–57; 1 John 3:5, 8) and to abolish sin and death (Ephesians 2:14–16). God also used Matthew to confirm that Mary was a virgin. God tells us in Matthew 1:18 that Mary and Joseph had not been together. It’s a reference to the fact that they had never had sexual relations. We’ll see another ref- erence later, but for now, we know that God is confirming for us that Mary was definitely a virgin. As we think about the miracle that took place—God choosing to come to earth as a baby, to live in an earthly shell, to face every temptation as we do yet never to sin—so that He could pay the price for our sin is over- whelmingly astounding! The fact that God loves us (Romans 5:8) that much is truly hard to comprehend.

Day 2

In Matthew 1:19, we find that Joseph was a righteous man. As followers of Christ, we know that our righteousness is only found through our relationship with Christ since we surren- dered to Him as our Lord and Savior. So, there’s no doubt that Joseph followed God and desired to honor God through his life. If Joseph were just a religious man (...

Day 3

If you’re reading this on the accurate date, “Merry Christmas.” God is sovereign (in absolute charge and control to carry out His perfect will) in all things (Philippians 2:13). God knew the heart of Joseph, so He sent an angel to speak to Joseph in a dream. We read in Matthew 1:20, “But when he had considered this, be- hold, an angel of the ...

Day 4

In our American culture today, we do not investigate the mean- ings behind names. That’s not to say that parents do not labor over what they will name each child, because they do. But for most parents, it’s picking a name that sounds right, fits their family, does not sound hokey, or does not remind them of someone they do not like. In the Je...

Day 5

There are over four hundred prophecies that Jesus perfectly fulfilled. The prophecies quoted in Matthew 1:23 come straight out of Isaiah 7:14, Isaiah 9:6–7, and Isaiah 8:10. The evidence of Jesuss’ Lordship is unquestionable—still, many question wheth- er Jesus is the One True Messiah. In “Science Speaks” (Moody Press, 1963), Peter Stoner det...

Day 6

Obedience to our Lord and His Word is the evidence of a changed life. God’s Word tells us in Matthew 1:24, “And Joseph awoke from his sleep and did as the angel of the Lord commanded him, and took Mary as his wife.” When Joseph woke up, he never doubted what God had spoken to Him through His angel, and Joseph obeyed what God told him to do. G...

Day 7

Joseph was willing to trust and obey God. We see this evidence clearly in Matthew 1:25. Joseph gave the baby the name of Jesus, which was the name the angel had given to Joseph as the angel spoke to him in his dream. Another sign of Joseph obeying God was that Joesph did not have sexual relations with Mary until she gave birth to Jesus. Now, ...
