Day 7

Scripture to Read: Matthew 1:25

Joseph was willing to trust and obey God. We see this evidence clearly in Matthew 1:25. Joseph gave the baby the name of Jesus, which was the name the angel had given to Joseph as the angel spoke to him in his dream. Another sign of Joseph obeying God was that Joesph did not have sexual relations with Mary until she gave birth to Jesus. Now, nowhere in Scripture do we find where Joseph was told not to have sexual relations with Mary until she gave birth to Jesus, but Joseph’s choice to do this showed how he walked in God’s righteousness and hon- ored Him. Joseph fulfilled Philippians 2:3–4, “Do nothing from selfishness or empty conceit, but with humility of mind regard one another as more important than yourselves; do not merely look out for your own personal interests, but also for the inter- ests of others.” The reason God had Matthew record that Joseph kept Mary a virgin until she gave birth to Jesus was to provide even more evidence that Jesus was the Son of God. We know Mary and Joseph had sexual relations after Jesus was born be- cause Jesus had younger brothers and sisters. Some religions teach that Mary should be worshipped, not only because she was the mother of Jesus, but because they also teach that Mary remained a virgin her entire life. We must continually examine God’s Word so that when we encounter false teachings we are not swayed by them—also, God is then able to use us to help teach and lead others to follow God’s Word.

Challenge & Application

• What did God teach you today about trusting and obeying Him as Joseph did? • How are you studying the Word daily, and how is God trans- forming you through His Word?

Don’t forget to pray using the A.C.T.S. (Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, Supplication) method!

Day 1

God used eight different men to write His Word, which we know as the New Testament. Matthew was one of those writers. God used these men to reveal all He wanted us to know about Him- self as Father, Son, and Spirit. The focus for this week is on Je- sus. Jesus was 100% human, being born of a woman, and 100% God because the seed planted in Mar...

Day 2

In Matthew 1:19, we find that Joseph was a righteous man. As followers of Christ, we know that our righteousness is only found through our relationship with Christ since we surren- dered to Him as our Lord and Savior. So, there’s no doubt that Joseph followed God and desired to honor God through his life. If Joseph were just a religious man (...

Day 3

If you’re reading this on the accurate date, “Merry Christmas.” God is sovereign (in absolute charge and control to carry out His perfect will) in all things (Philippians 2:13). God knew the heart of Joseph, so He sent an angel to speak to Joseph in a dream. We read in Matthew 1:20, “But when he had considered this, be- hold, an angel of the ...

Day 4

In our American culture today, we do not investigate the mean- ings behind names. That’s not to say that parents do not labor over what they will name each child, because they do. But for most parents, it’s picking a name that sounds right, fits their family, does not sound hokey, or does not remind them of someone they do not like. In the Je...

Day 5

There are over four hundred prophecies that Jesus perfectly fulfilled. The prophecies quoted in Matthew 1:23 come straight out of Isaiah 7:14, Isaiah 9:6–7, and Isaiah 8:10. The evidence of Jesuss’ Lordship is unquestionable—still, many question wheth- er Jesus is the One True Messiah. In “Science Speaks” (Moody Press, 1963), Peter Stoner det...

Day 6

Obedience to our Lord and His Word is the evidence of a changed life. God’s Word tells us in Matthew 1:24, “And Joseph awoke from his sleep and did as the angel of the Lord commanded him, and took Mary as his wife.” When Joseph woke up, he never doubted what God had spoken to Him through His angel, and Joseph obeyed what God told him to do. G...
