Scripture to Read: Luke 16:29
For the first time, we see the rich man show some concern for his five brothers and not just for himself. But then, we read in Luke 16:29, “But Abraham *said, ‘They have Moses and the Prophets; let them hear them.’” Jesus, through His parable and Abraham’s response, quickly pointed out that what God had already provided through His Word in what Moses recorded and in what the Prophets recorded was more than enough evidence to show everyone how to love and follow God wholeheartedly. Jesus was making the point that what people do with what they already know reveals their true heart’s desire. True repentance comes when people are willing to actually listen to God’s Truth, for then they will respond to His Word. Jesus wanted His disciples, and even the Pharisees who were there, to know that God’s Word was more than enough evidence to lead people to repentance. Though Jesus and the Apostles used miraculous signs to lead people to surrender to Christ, miraculous signs alone were never enough to change an unrepentant heart that refuses to listen to God’s Truth. The way we respond to God’s Word, especially in how we treat everyone around us, carries eternal significance. That is why the daily pursuit of our fellowship with our Lord and His Word is critical to how we choose to live for Him each day. As we grow in our intimacy with Him and His Word, we’ll continue to become more like Him (Ephesians 5:1–3). We must cherish, store up, and treasure Him and His Word and walk in full obedience to Him.
