Scripture to Read: 1 Corinthians 15:54–58
God wanted to ensure that every believer understands that a day is coming when death will be no more. God had Paul write in 1 Corinthians 15:54–58, “But when this perishable will have put on the imperishable, and this mortal will have put on immortality, then will come about the saying that is written, ‘Death is swallowed up in victory. 55 O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting?’ 56 The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law; 57 but thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. 58 Therefore, my beloved brethren, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that your toil is not in vain in the Lord.” What a glorious day it will be when death is finally swallowed up forever. The reason death is so hard for us to understand and grasp is because God created us as eternal beings. God designed us to live forever, but sin brought death into this world and into our lives. We read in Ecclesiastes 3:11 that God “has also set eternity in their heart.” God has given us this mysterious longing to live forever and nothing can satisfy this longing except God alone through our Lord Jesus Christ. It is through Christ that we have the victory over death. This is why we must live every day being strong in the Lord. We must daily serve our Lord by walking according to His Word, knowing that nothing we do for Him is ever useless.
