Scripture to Read: Luke 12:39–44
Living in constant readiness for the return of our Lord is something we must choose to do. There are many things that distract us from focusing on Christ’s return and if we let those distractions get the best of us, we’ll miss out on the blessing. God had Luke record this in Luke 12:39–40, “But be sure of this, that if the head of the house had known at what hour the thief was coming, he would not have allowed his house to be broken into. 40 You too, be ready; for the Son of Man is coming at an hour that you do not expect.” Jesus chose to use a thief as an example of readiness. The thief never tells the people he plans to rob when he’s coming, but he comes when least expected. The only way to be guarded against a thief is to live with an expectancy of his arrival. The only way to be ready for the return of our Lord Jesus Christ is to live with a constant expectancy. Sadly, Jesus said He’s coming when least expected. That is somewhat exciting because so many live today with little or no expectation of our Lord’s return. As Jesus spoke, we see that Peter asked Jesus a great question in Luke 12:41. Peter said, “Lord, are You addressing this parable to us, or to everyone else as well?” Peter wasn’t sure whether Jesus was just talking to His closest disciples or meant this for all of His followers. In Luke 12:42–44, Jesus answered first with a question, then with an answer.
