Day 5

Scripture to Read: Luke 12:49–53

Jesus’ teachings were sometimes easy to understand and at other times harder to understand. As God led Luke to write, Jesus said in Luke 12:49–53, “I have come to cast fire upon the earth; and how I wish it were already kindled! 50 But I have a baptism to undergo, and how distressed I am until it is accomplished! 51 Do you suppose that I came to grant peace on earth? I tell you, no, but rather division; 52 for from now on five members in one household will be divided, three against two and two against three. 53 They will be divided, father against son and son against father, mother against daughter and daughter against mother, mother-in-law against daughter-in-law and daughter-in-law against mother-in-law.” Jesus spoke of the “fire.” Fire was viewed as a time of judgment among the Jews. So, the Jews may have seen Jesus’ coming as a time of judgment for them. The “fire” could also refer to the coming of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit was not poured out on all believers until after Christ’s death, burial, resurrection, and ascension. It makes sense that Jesus said He had to undergo His baptism first. The “fire” could also refer to the spread of the gospel, which again, could not happen until Christ fulfilled His purpose. Jesus also spoke of division for the sake of following Him. I saw this firsthand years ago when a “completed Jew” (what they call themselves after surrendering to Christ as Messiah) shared with me how his parents had a funeral for him when he became a follower of Christ.

Challenge & Application

How has the fire of the Holy Spirit in you changed you and the fire of the gospel spread through you? How have you seen families divided through those who have surrendered to Christ and those who have not?

Don’t forget to pray using the A.C.T.S. (Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, Supplication) method!

Day 1

In our last set of devotions, we know our Lord told us not to be greedy and not to worry. We must be thankful for all the Lord has provided for us and know He is constantly working in us and through us. As God led Luke to write, we now read in Luke 12:35–36, “Be dressed in readiness, and keep your lamps lit. 36 Be like men who are waiting for...

Day 2

As Jesus’ followers, we must live with expectant anticipation of His return while serving Him wholeheartedly until He returns. God had Luke record this in Luke 12:37–38, “Blessed are those slaves whom the master will find on the alert when he comes; truly I say to you, that he will gird himself to serve, and have them recline at the table, an...

Day 3

Living in constant readiness for the return of our Lord is something we must choose to do. There are many things that distract us from focusing on Christ’s return and if we let those distractions get the best of us, we’ll miss out on the blessing. God had Luke record this in Luke 12:39–40, “But be sure of this, that if the head of the house h...

Day 4

Jesus did answer Peter in Luke 12:42–44, “And the Lord said, ‘Who then is the faithful and sensible steward, whom his master will put in charge of his servants, to give them their rations at the proper time? 43 Blessed is that slave whom his master finds so doing when he comes. 44 Truly I say to you that he will put him in charge of all his p...

Day 6

Jesus would go back and forth as He taught, sometimes speaking directly to His disciples and sometimes addressing the crowd that was there with them. God had Luke record this in Luke 12:54–56, “And He was also saying to the crowds, ‘When you see a cloud rising in the west, immediately you say, ‘A shower is coming,’ and so it turns out. 55 And...

Day 7

Jesus continued to rebuke the crowd as God had Luke record in Luke 12:57–59, “And why do you not even on your own initiative judge what is right? 58 For while you are going with your opponent to appear before the magistrate, on your way there make an effort to settle with him, so that he may not drag you before the judge, and the judge turn y...
