Day 2

Scripture to Read: 1 Corinthians 10:6–7

God explained through Paul what His children should avoid. We read in 1 Corinthians 10:6–7, “Now these things happened as examples for us, so that we would not crave evil things as they also craved. 7 Do not be idolaters, as some of them were; as it is written, ‘The people sat down to eat and drink, and stood up to play.’” God has recorded warnings throughout His Word so that we, as His children, can see the examples of those who chose to walk in disobedience to Him and the consequences they suffered as a result. God does not want us craving the evil things the Israelites of old craved. Our cravings come from our fleshly nature; that is why we must crucify our fleshly desires daily. God used the example of “The Golden Calf” in Exodus 32. We read in Exodus 32:1–2, “when the people saw that Moses delayed to come down from the mountain, the people assembled about Aaron and said to him, ‘Come, make us a god who will go before us; as for this Moses, the man who brought us up from the land of Egypt, we do not know what has become of him.’” The Israelites were so impatient as Moses was on Mount Sinai speaking with God that they asked for a false god to follow. God does not want us doubting Him even in His times of silence, but to trust in Him, knowing He is actively working in and around us daily, even when we don’t see or recognize His handiwork. We must choose to worship Him alone.

Challenge & Application

Why has God recorded so many examples in His Word of His children walking in disobedience? How can we learn from the examples God has given us, not only of disobedience but also of obedience to Him?

Day 1

God has continual warnings throughout His Word for His children so that we do not walk as lost people walk. God used Paul to share with the believers in Corinth not to walk as the disobedient children of Israel walked after they had been delivered from the bondage of Egypt, as recorded in the Book of Exodus. We read in 1 Corinthians 10:1–5, “...

Day 3

Through Paul, God continued to lay out the acts of the flesh that the Israelites fell into, because God wants to ensure that all of His children avoid them. We read in 1 Corinthians 10:8, “Nor let us act immorally, as some of them did, and twenty-three thousand fell in one day.” The children of Israel (in Numbers 25:1–9) had chosen to turn th...

Day 4

So far, God has shown us several examples of the stubbornness of the children of Israel. Through Paul, God lays out another example, as we read in 1 Corinthians 10:9, “Nor let us try the Lord, as some of them did, and were destroyed by the serpents.” God had Paul remind the Christians in Corinth of what happened as recorded in Numbers 21:5–9....

As we move forward, we read today what God had Paul record in 1 Corinthians 10:10, “Nor grumble, as some of them did, and were destroyed by the destroyer.” To grumble means to have unjustified discontentment. God use...

Day 6

Through Paul, God tells us today why He gave all of the examples, as we read in 1 Corinthians 10:11–13, “Now these things happened to them as an example, and they were written for our instruction, upon whom the ends of the ages have come. 12 Therefore let him who thinks he stands take heed that he does not fall. 13 No temptation has overtaken...

Day 7

God had Paul warn the Christians in Corinth—and this warning remains relevant for all Christians today—to guard against any kind of idolatry. God wants all of His children to flee from the worship of any kind of idols. God had Paul use the example of the Lord’s Supper. We must realize that when we take the cup at the Lord’s Supper, it serves ...
