Scripture to Read: 1 Corinthians 10:10
So far, God has warned against craving evil things, not to be idolaters, not to live or act immorally, and not to test the Lord. As we move forward, we read today what God had Paul record in 1 Corinthians 10:10, “Nor grumble, as some of them did, and were destroyed by the destroyer.” To grumble means to have unjustified discontentment. God used the Israelites’ example that occurred in Numbers 16 when “Korah the son of Izhar, the son of Kohath, the son of Levi, with Dathan and Abiram, the sons of Eliab, and On the son of Peleth, sons of Reuben, took action, 2 and they rose up before Moses, together with some of the sons of Israel, two hundred and fifty leaders of the congregation,” (Numbers 16:1–2). These men claimed to be just as holy as Moses and Aaron and they also claimed that Moses and Aaron had exalted themselves above the assembly of the Lord. Needless to say, God brought His judgment on all of these men who stood against Moses and Aaron. But then, the very next day, even after seeing how God opened the earth and swallowed up those who rebelled, “all the congregation of the sons of Israel grumbled against Moses and Aaron, saying, ‘You are the ones who have caused the death of the Lord’s people.’” (Numbers 16:41). Again, we see just an incredibly stubborn and arrogant people. God wants us, as His children, to walk humbly before Him. God desires that our fellowship with Him be intimate so that we do all things without any grumbling.
