Day 3

Scripture to Read: 1 Corinthians 10:8

Through Paul, God continued to lay out the acts of the flesh that the Israelites fell into, because God wants to ensure that all of His children avoid them. We read in 1 Corinthians 10:8, “Nor let us act immorally, as some of them did, and twenty-three thousand fell in one day.” The children of Israel (in Numbers 25:1–9) had chosen to turn their backs on God and instead joined themselves to the false god, Baal of Peor. God’s anger burned against them, and 23,000 people died in one day, but the total number who died added up to 24,000. God never looks lightly on sin of any kind. We must remember that our Lord Jesus Christ took upon Himself all of God’s wrath so that everyone who surrenders to Christ as Lord and Savior is made perfect and complete in the eyes of God the Father. Sin always results in death. God makes this clear in Romans 6:23: “For the wages of sin is death,” and in James 1:15, “Then when lust has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and when sin is accomplished, it brings forth death.” As Christians, we have so much to be grateful for through Christ our Lord. God tells us in 1 Thessalonians 4:3–5, “For this is the will of God, your sanctification; that is, that you abstain from sexual immorality; 4 that each of you know how to possess his own vessel in sanctification and honor, 5 not in lustful passion, like the Gentiles who do not know God.”—it’s His perfect will.

Challenge & Application

Day 1

God has continual warnings throughout His Word for His children so that we do not walk as lost people walk. God used Paul to share with the believers in Corinth not to walk as the disobedient children of Israel walked after they had been delivered from the bondage of Egypt, as recorded in the Book of Exodus. We read in 1 Corinthians 10:1–5, “...

Day 2

God explained through Paul what His children should avoid. We read in 1 Corinthians 10:6–7, “Now these things happened as examples for us, so that we would not crave evil things as they also craved. 7 Do not be idolaters, as some of them were; as it is written, ‘The people sat down to eat and drink, and stood up to play.’” God has recorded wa...

Day 4

So far, God has shown us several examples of the stubbornness of the children of Israel. Through Paul, God lays out another example, as we read in 1 Corinthians 10:9, “Nor let us try the Lord, as some of them did, and were destroyed by the serpents.” God had Paul remind the Christians in Corinth of what happened as recorded in Numbers 21:5–9....

Day 5

So far, God has warned against craving evil things, not to be idolaters, not to live or act immorally, and not to test the Lord. As we move forward, we read today what God had Paul record in 1 Corinthians 10:10, “Nor grumble, as some of them did, and were destroyed by the destroyer.” To grumble means to have unjustified discontentment. God use...

Day 6

Through Paul, God tells us today why He gave all of the examples, as we read in 1 Corinthians 10:11–13, “Now these things happened to them as an example, and they were written for our instruction, upon whom the ends of the ages have come. 12 Therefore let him who thinks he stands take heed that he does not fall. 13 No temptation has overtaken...

Day 7

God had Paul warn the Christians in Corinth—and this warning remains relevant for all Christians today—to guard against any kind of idolatry. God wants all of His children to flee from the worship of any kind of idols. God had Paul use the example of the Lord’s Supper. We must realize that when we take the cup at the Lord’s Supper, it serves ...
