Day 4

Scripture to Read: 1 Corinthians 10:9

So far, God has shown us several examples of the stubbornness of the children of Israel. Through Paul, God lays out another example, as we read in 1 Corinthians 10:9, “Nor let us try the Lord, as some of them did, and were destroyed by the serpents.” God had Paul remind the Christians in Corinth of what happened as recorded in Numbers 21:5–9. We read in Numbers 21:5, “The people spoke against God and Moses, ‘Why have you brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? For there is no food and no water, and we loathe this miserable food.’” The people of Israel were so arrogant and self-absorbed that they not only spoke against Moses, but they also spoke against God. God had been providing their every need for almost 40 years, and instead of worshipping Him and being ever so thankful for His abundant provision, they griped, complained, and actually told God they hated the food He had provided. God, in His loving discipline, sent fiery serpents among the Israelites, and everyone who was bitten died. We should never put our Lord to the test, as if we deserve more than all He’s already provided for us. We have been given a thousand times more than the Israelites, for we have complete forgiveness of all our sins through Christ our Lord. We have the fullness of His grace, mercy, love, compassion, kindness, gentleness, and so much more. We must live each day choosing a thankful attitude for everything we have already been blessed with through Christ.

Challenge & Application

Why were the children of Israel disciplined so severely, and what is God teaching us? How are you keeping a thankful attitude each day for all God has done for you through Christ?

Don’t forget to pray using the A.C.T.S. (Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, Supplication) method!

Day 1

God has continual warnings throughout His Word for His children so that we do not walk as lost people walk. God used Paul to share with the believers in Corinth not to walk as the disobedient children of Israel walked after they had been delivered from the bondage of Egypt, as recorded in the Book of Exodus. We read in 1 Corinthians 10:1–5, “...

God explained through Paul what His children should avoid. We read in 1 Corinthians 10:6–7, “Now these things happened as examples for us, so that we would not crave evil things as they also craved. 7 Do not be idolaters, as some of them were; as it is written, ‘The people sat down to eat and drink, and stood up to play.’” God has recorded wa...

Day 3

Through Paul, God continued to lay out the acts of the flesh that the Israelites fell into, because God wants to ensure that all of His children avoid them. We read in 1 Corinthians 10:8, “Nor let us act immorally, as some of them did, and twenty-three thousand fell in one day.” The children of Israel (in Numbers 25:1–9) had chosen to turn th...

As we move forward, we read today what God had Paul record in 1 Corinthians 10:10, “Nor grumble, as some of them did, and were destroyed by the destroyer.” To grumble means to have unjustified discontentment. God use...

Day 6

Through Paul, God tells us today why He gave all of the examples, as we read in 1 Corinthians 10:11–13, “Now these things happened to them as an example, and they were written for our instruction, upon whom the ends of the ages have come. 12 Therefore let him who thinks he stands take heed that he does not fall. 13 No temptation has overtaken...

Day 7

God had Paul warn the Christians in Corinth—and this warning remains relevant for all Christians today—to guard against any kind of idolatry. God wants all of His children to flee from the worship of any kind of idols. God had Paul use the example of the Lord’s Supper. We must realize that when we take the cup at the Lord’s Supper, it serves ...
